Cliff Richard, born Harry Rodger Webb on 14 October 1940 in Lucknow, India, is a British singer and entertainer whose career has spanned more than six decades. He began performing with the backing group The Drifters, later renamed The Shadows, and became one of Britain's first major rock and roll stars.
His breakthrough came in 1958 with Move It!, a song widely regarded as one of the earliest significant British rock and roll recordings. Further hits included Living Doll, The Young Ones, Summer Holiday and Congratulations.
Cliff Richard successfully adapted his music throughout his career, moving from rock and roll to pop, adult contemporary and Christian music. He represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest several times and achieved major chart success across several decades.
His career has produced numerous UK number-one singles and albums, making him one of Britain's most successful recording artists. He has also appeared in films and television programmes and has undertaken extensive international touring.
Richard was knighted in 1995 for services to music and charity.
